59: TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN!

Now that you’ve got your awesome team assembled and you’ve trained them and trust them to do their jobs—I hate to break it to you, but the training is never over. It is not a one-time event. You have to keep developing all your employees as your business evolves, forevermore.

Just because you put employees through a two-week training period doesn’t mean you can forget about them. No way. You’ve got to follow that up with another training session three months later . . . then another one after that . . . and then another one. You get the idea: train, train, refresh, and train some more. You can’t get stale: you have to keep on top of it.

I highly suggest that you hire someone to run your training and development programs from your company’s inception. It doesn’t matter how small you are—do it now. Don’t wait until you’ve got a hundred employees.

Remember: it’s much easier to make incremental changes to your company culture than large ones. You can do this by slightly improving your processes and then training your employees on the changes as you go along.

This is at the very heart of why I’m a huge fan of continued education. My philosophy on it is simple:

Your team is never complete.

Every employee is always a work in progress, including yourself.

It can always be done better. It has to be if you want to win a title. And who doesn’t want to win a championship ring?
